Installations
I drove down many county roads and highways over the last four or five years. The monotony and vastness broken only by gleaming signs and small vertical markers lining the roads. The shapes and colors warn of an upcoming curve or of construction ahead. I saw from a distance small dots against the landscape. Then on approach the flash of yellow or orange of the workers’ vests caution you to their presence. I found the vibrance of their clothing and the signs alerting you of their existence a welcome contrast to the miles and miles of rolling hills and flat farmland.
I work with materials that alert people to danger. Reflective tape, pole markers, blind spot mirrors. I often utilize convex mirrors that pivot in temporary outdoor installations, allowing the viewer to see ever changing perspectives of themselves and their world. As the viewer stands interacting with the mirrors, they also serve as the inflection point in between what has happened before and what is yet to come. The pieces are both a playful piece of warped self-reflection as well as a reminder that what is in the mirror isn’t always as it appears. Reality shifts. What once was does not have to continue to be.
